The committee began the workshop at a quarter to nine. It was 45 minutes late from the schedule since they had a little bit trouble with computer and LCD. The first agenda was an opening ceremony given by Wuri Soedjatmiko, the director of Graduate School.

Session I was given by Prof. Dr. Adrian Palmer. He talked about Designing Useful Language Teaching Tasks. He warmed up the audience with a question: What makes a language test useful?
To answer the question, he gave us four qualities of usefulness i.e Reliability, Construct validity, Authenticity, and Beneficial Impact.

Session II was given by Prof. Palmer, too. The topic was Creating Meaningful Language Teaching Tasks. Meaningfulness, according to him depends on the degree of involvement of various attributes of an individual in performing a language use task, including
Topical knowledge
Language knowledge
Personal attributes
Affective schemata
Problem Solving strategies

Session III was given by Prof. Dr. MaryAnn Christison. Her topic was Leadership Development in ELT. First, she led us to traditional views on leadership such as leaders are born not made, it deals with position so that only leaders lead. Then, she brought us into emerging views on leadership such as leadership is defined by the behaviours not the position, leaders’ behaviours can be quantified and studied, and we can learn to be an effective leader.

She offered two models of leadership development:
Leadership IQ.
v Leadership can be defined and measured as a form of intelligence.
v Effective leaders know how to say the right thing to the right people at the right time in order to get the right work done.
v Leadership IQ can be activated through specific activities that lead to behaviours associated with effective leadership.

There are 8 roles for Leaders:
1. The selector
2. The connector
3. The problem solver
4. The evaluator
5. The negotiator
6. The healer
7. The protector
8. The synergizer

Meta-analyses of Effective Leaders.
Characteristics of Effective Leaders are:
v Affirmation
v Change Agent
v Communication
